Pushbacks about federalism

“A fiscal nightmare.”

More and more groups are opposing President Rodrigo Duterte’s push for federalism, otherwise known as Bayanihan Federalism as Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez stated that the draft constitution could “wreak havoc” on the economy at Malacanang, September 8.

Dominguez said that not only does it endanger the government’s finances, it is also completely needless for he sees that by simply revamping the Local Government Code (LGC), the Philippines can empower the regions without assuming all the risks that accompany charter change.

 “It doesn’t ensure regional self-governance.”

He uttered that the regional self-governance is very weakly established and it still props up a top-down relationship between the central and regional governments.

As of now, the decision is still under deliberation by the congress and is open for remarks and criticisms regarding federalism in the Philippines.
